Add Gorgeous Fall Shades To Your Color With Highlights

Fall is a season of drastic changes. Leaves completely change their colors and fall off the trees. Temperatures plummet from blazing hot to cold and frosty. It’s also a season when most people shift their hair color from the lighter, brighter shades of summer to the more muted and earthy tones of autumn. But what if you’re not ready to give up your sunny summer shade? Add a bit of fall flair with highlights, of course!

Intro to Highlights

First, let’s give a brief introduction for those that are new to highlights. Highlights are sections of hair that are dyed a lighter or different color. They elevate your base color and add dimension and interest to your hair. They typically lighten your color just a little, but they can also be used to incorporate other colors to update your hair when you don’t want an overall color change.

Different Types of Highlights

There is a vast array of options when it comes to highlights. They come in so many different styles and you can have any color you choose. Here are a few of the more popular styles that you might want to try.

All Over Highlights- This is the style of highlights that most people go for. These highlights are usually a shade or two lighter than your base to create depth, but for fall you might choose to incorporate a totally different color- perhaps hints of light cinnamon brown or copper if your hair is light, or maybe shades of wine or plum in darker strands.

Chunky- While other highlights are usually rather subtle, chunky highlights are bold and daring. Wider strips of a higher contrast color create a unique and trendy look that will help you stand out in the crowd.

Face Framing- The goal of this type of highlight is to make your face the focal point and enhance your features. It creates a stark contrast right in the front that draws the eye right to your face. Money piece highlights are one example that uses wide strips of bold color that really command attention.

Peek-a-Boo- If you’re looking for a super fun way to add a pop of color to your mane, these are the highlights for you. While the hair on top remains the same, the layers underneath are dyed in various shades that peek through as you move to allow bold flashes of color to peek through and then vanish as the hair on top settles back into place. Imagine the fun you could have with a gorgeous fall color palette!

Babylights- This style of highlights uses smaller strips of color, usually on just a few strands at a time, and often uses more than one shade. They mimic the multidimensional color most often seen in young children’s hair. These highlights are very soft and subtle for a very natural look.

Ombre- This is one of the bolder highlighting choices. Ombre starts out darker at the roots and gradually lightens towards the ends in bands of color. Imagine a deep chestnut brown that fades to rich red and then copper or dark auburn that seemingly melts into fiery copper then glinting gold.

Lowlights- While applied in the same way and with the same technique as highlights, lowlights' purpose is to darken your color, which is perfect for fall. Lowlights are an excellent solution if you’re not ready to let go of your summer color just yet and want a more gradual transition to the darker colors typical of winter.
